PowerKee’s Bastion of Privacy #25 — An organization connected to several airlines has been the subject of a major hack

Air India becomes the latest victim in a growing list of organizations that have been the subject of cybersecurity attacks. Critical customer information from the airline has been exposed. The company recently revealed that the personal data of over 4.5 million customers has been compromised. Data breaches like this are becoming a regular occurrence. While announcing the incident, Air India advised customers to take precautions such as changing their passwords to prevent further damage.

In the latest Bastion of Privacy, we detail the Air India Data Breach and highlight why it might be bigger than initially expected. We also consider the legislative attempts made by regulators to provide further data protection and what netizens can do to take further measures towards protection.

More Airline Attacks To Come?

Earlier this year, SITA, one of the biggest multinational IT companies that provide services to airlines across the globe, reported that its platform had been attacked. At the time, SITA reported that certain passenger data that was stored on their servers was affected in the attack.

A few months later Air India confirmed that its customers, numbering over 4.5 million, were affected in the incident. According to Air India, the stolen information included passengers’ names, credit card details, date of birth, contact information, passport information, ticket information, and Air India frequent flyer data. The report covers Air India only. Other airlines that are serviced by SITA could release reports showing similar damages.

A bigger concern is the frequency of attacks on corporations that are responsible for huge repositories of customer data. The increased usage of the internet since the start of the COVID-19 pandemic has resulted in more people exploring cybersecurity attacks while there is also more data to be exploited.

The Windy Road Of Legislation

From the legislative angle, the twists and turns surrounding data privacy regulations have continued in an unending cycle. Compliance frameworks across several regions have been the subject of continuous debate, with the responsibility of data security yet to be properly defined.

In many instances, the end users end up as the victims. The recent exploits show that the legislative approach alone will not stop the ever more frequent cybersecurity attacks. Netizens need to turn to innovative technology solutions to ensure protection

Protecting Financial Data with Blockchain Technology

Privacy blockchains are one option that allows users to protect their financial data. Users can easily transfer value across a distributed network and benefit from the distributed security of the network. Distributed nodes maintain the network and ensure that the privacy and security assurances are protected.

PowerKee is one such privacy network. The native token of the network, KEE, can be quickly and cheaply transferred while the sender can also protect their anonymity. Adopting legal solutions aimed at achieving effective data privacy frameworks will only partly improve the state of cybersecurity. For those that wish to take further measures, using privacy-focused blockchains is a worthy consideration.
